I should disagree with this assessment. I think “colour” had the diphthong /iu/ throughout and the spelling in CW <lew> is for /iu/, as it is also in other cases, e.g. <pew> “who”, <dew> “God”, also words with diphthongised /y/ > /iu/ such as <tew> “side” (cf. Lhluyd <diụ> “black”);
