Deal all,

Forgive me if I'm slow on the uptake, but is there any sort of rule for KS
regarding writing a short vowel followed by two consonants (e.g. *call*)
versus followed by one with shortness marked with the grave accent (e.g. *
càl*)? What makes one preferable to the other? I mean in general, not just
with this one particular word.
