It was indeed, Owen - that "air" vowel sound we have in West Cornwall,
I think the "straight" one rather than the pitch-bend variety heard in
"shaft". This isn't easy to describe but if you can imagine saying
"share-eft" (with no R pronunciation, of course), then you're close to
it.
