Etymology. The root *wesper > *wisqwer > ugher (cf. W ucher).; cf.
ughel < *uksello-
Words with -gh- are common in UC, e.g. fleghes, seghes, byghan,
dyghow, because <-gh-> is attested in PA.
Nance adopted -gh- in preference to the commoner -h- and George
imitated him without question.
