Thanks for those, Jan. If you go to YouTube and search on 'Cornish
Language', you'll get several dozen hits (including these 2), some of
which are quite good -- and others a waste of bandwidth, govy!
** What follows is off-topic for this list, but might be useful. **
For those of you runnng MacOS X on your PC, there's a couple of ways
to download movies from sites like YouTube (which don't offer you a
download option).
(For those unfortunates stuck with Windows, there's probably
something equivalent. I doubt whether Microsoft's Internet Explorer
can handle the 2nd method, so it might be worth looking at one of the
free alternatives, such as Firefox or Opera, which tend to be leaner
and more powerful.)
(1) The simplest movie download method is this:
-- download the free Mac utility 'TubeTV' from http://
www.chimoosoft.com/products/tubetv/
-- install it, and do the same with the freeware program Perian, from
http://perian.org
-- TubeTV will download Flash and YouTube-type movies, and
automatically convert them from an FLV file into a choice of other
formats.
-- play them either in QuickTime Player, or in one of the other apps
mentioned below.
(2) Alternatively, you could try this more hands-on method:
-- in the Safari browser, open the Window / Activity window
-- go to the YouTube (or whatever) page has the movie on, and start
to play it
-- in the Activity window, you'll typically see in the list 1 large
file downloading, probably over 1/2 MB in size. This will be the
movied. Double click on that item in the list, and Safari will
obligingly download it for you, with the name "get_video"
-- rename it as you choose, and add the file exension .flv
(3) Playing your downloaded movies:
-- to play this sort of FLV file, you'll need to enhance Quicktime by
installing the freeware program Perian, from http://perian.org
-- instead of using 'QuickTime Player', you might like to install the
free "SWF and FLV Player" from http://mac.eltima.com/
freeflashplayer.html
-- another good player that's worth having is the free VLC Media
Player from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/, which is available for both
Mac and Windows. VLC can handle many formats of audio and video, and
acts as a player, converter and streaming media server program. You
really ought to have a copy anyway.
(I'm not sure if Windows Media Centre --or whatever it's called-- can
handle FLV files. If not, there's probably a free upgrade you can
download for it).
